Hand Of History On The 45

Only 45 Waterford  hurlers have started an All Ireland Minor Hurling Final.

The county has only played in 3 Minor Finals. The first was in 1929 when the Déise won the 2nd ever Minor Final beating Meath.

The team contained the now legendary Locky Byrne who went on to play in a Senior Final for arch rivals Kilkenny. Locky had a distinguished career with Mount Sion before dying from TB at a young age.

The next final was also a successful one. In September 1948 the Waterford Seniors won the county's 1st ever  title and this was preceded by a win by the Minors over Kilkenny. Some footage exists of the day's action with commentator Micheál Ó Héhir.

That team featured 6 hurlers and a selector from the Cappoquinn club known as the Magnificent Seven

The 1948 team came from just 3 clubs and there is an interesting discussion in www.anfearrua.com  here

Déise hurling fans waited 44 years to see the minors in a final. The team went down to Galway.  Many of that team went on to distinguished careers a senior level
